Social media has become an integral part of the marketing strategy of many businesses. With all these accounts, companies strive to reach as many people as possible. No matter what platform you are on, having a large following can only help increase the awareness of your brand and provide better end results. Here are seven tips to build your audience on social media:
Know Which Platforms to Spend Time On
Many businesses make the mistake of believing they need to be on every single social media platform. But, trying to cover all platforms at all times may not be the best way to increase your reach across social media. Understanding what the different platforms can offer and how you can use each one is key. If you know your target audience is mostly using a certain platform, dedicate more time to that. If your competitors are all on the same platform, make sure you are too, and then make sure you have other platforms covered that they may not. Do not waste your time trying to build up a presence on every single platform. By prioritizing the use of different sites and knowing which ones to focus on, you can increase your reach.
Link Your Social Profiles
Many businesses link their company websites to their social accounts. An easy way to increase your following with barely any work is to simply be visible. Whenever you print out content or send an email, have your social profiles visible somewhere. Have an area on the side of your website that says something along the lines of “Connect with us” or “Follow us on social.” When customers are easily linked to your social profile they are more likely to follow you and see what you are posting.
One very effective way to reach a bigger audience and grow your following, which may be easier said than done, is to have intriguing, thought-provoking content. If you have valuable content for your current audience base, they are more likely to share your content and therefore increase the reach of posts and help you gain even more followers. Post content that people will look for and want to see all the time. If you become known as having strong content your reach will increase in no time.
Other than just you posting your own interesting content, it pays to engage. Join the conversation! On platforms like Twitter, it is very easy to use certain hashtags and join in on what people are talking about or what is currently “trending.” If people are talking about your product or service or mentioning you directly, talk back. People will see that you are human. Engage with questions or insights that will continue the conversation. You’d be surprise how many people will respond to your questions or be impressed that you are having a legitimate conversation with them. By joining the dialogue, people will continue to see your name pop up and start to listen to what your saying.
Social engagement is definitely a great tip; however, sometimes in order to gain followers or increase your reach, it goes beyond what you are posting. It takes sitting back and listening. Whether monitoring keywords and seeing what people are saying or simply scrolling through your newsfeed, your posts can be tailored more directly toward those hot topics. Joining popular conversations after you listened to what people were saying will put you in front of many people’s eyes and can help grow your following.
Another way to increase your following is by understanding your current status. By using certain measurement tools, you can see what is working and what is not. If certain sites are not gaining traffic, are they worth your time? If you are getting a lot of traffic with certain types of content, shouldn’t you continue posting more of that content? Much like listening, you have to give the people what they want and in return your audience will grow.
When everything is said and done, social media is meant to be social. Like mentioned before it helps to engage and show you are human. Whatever platform you may be using, be genuine. People will know when you are genuine or human and when you are not. Whether already following you and coming across your name for the first time, if they see you are a real person, they are more likely to follow you. People are not going to follow a company or person that sounds robotic.
Social media has clearly become a major forefront in many marketing strategies, but, if you are not grasping the right audience or increasing your reach over time, is it really worth it? Keep these tips in mind the next time you are thinking about starting a social media campaign or trying to develop your social profiles.
